Soror Vicki Miles-LaGrange


Vicki Miles-LaGrange, a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, was born in Oklahoma City to parents who emphasized the importance of life long learning, the value of a good education, and giving back to the community.

She was the first African-American judge appointed to the federal bench in the Tenth Circuit, a lifetime appointment, in 1994 by President William Clinton. She was also the first female U.S. Attorney in Oklahoma, also appointed by President Clinton. She has also had significant international human rights experience as a member of the International Judicial Committee of the U.S. Judicial Conference and continues to work with courts in Rwanda, China, and South America.  

In 1986, she became the first African-American female elected to the Oklahoma Senate and later chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Oklahoma Legislative Black Caucus.

A cum laude graduate of Vassar College and Howard University School of Law, she was an Editor of the Howard Law Journal. She also served as a Congressional Intern for the Late Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Carl Albert. She co-authored A Passion for Equality: The Life of Jimmy Stewart, a 2000 Oklahoma Book Award Finalist. In 2007, she contributed to a book ,Voices From The Heartland, a Centennial celebration of women?s contributions to Oklahoma.

Her civic and professional honors include induction into the Oklahoma African-American Hall of Fame, Oklahoma Women?s Hall of Fame, and Oklahoma Child Advocates Hall of Fame. She was named in 2004 The Journal Record Woman of the Year, received an honorary Doctor of Laws from Oklahoma City University, and the Oklahoma Bar Association?s ?Woman Trailblazer? Award. In 2006, she received the Oklahoma City Public School Foundation Wall of Fame Humanitarian Award and the Oklahoma Bar Association?s Fern Holland Courageous Lawyer Award.

Throughout her public service career, Judge Miles-LaGrange has championed educational opportunity, children?s issues, civil rights and the even-handed administration of justice. As one of Oklahoma?s most dedicated public servants, she has been a role model for young Oklahomans of all backgrounds wishing to pursue public service careers , and she still finds time to volunteer and mentor students.
